Loss Reserve Analysis

Loss Reserve Analysis reports allow for the examination of a company’s losses in relation to their loss reserves. This information comes from Schedule P of a company's annual statement and is available only for property companies.

To View Loss Reserves reports using the Financial Reports page:  

  1. Search for an company or companies by performing a Company/Firm Search .
  2. Highlight which companies you want reports generated from, that are found in the Company List box.
  3. Select the Loss Reserves category from the Categories Frame.
  4. Click on the report you want to view.

Aggregate Schedule P Data

The NAIC Financial Analysis Department has aggregated various parts of Schedule P for the current and prior years and placed this information in the Loss Reserves application for regulator use only.

  1. Search for an company or companies by performing a Company/Firm Search .
  2. Highlight which companies you want reports generated from, that are found in the Company List box.
  3. Select the Loss Reserves category from the Report Categories.
  4. Click on the Aggregate Schedule P Data link on the page.
  5. Select the Data Year.
  6. Click the Open button to open the MS Excel file.
  7. Click the Save button to download the CSV file to your computer.

To View, Download, or Print Multiple Reports:

 Follow steps 1, 2, and 3, from the list above then: 

Click on the check boxes next to the reports you want to view.

Scroll down to the bottom of the screen

Click the View, Download, or Print button in the Reports Frame. 

To View, Download, or Print Multiple Reports from Multiple Report Categories: 

 Select and save one or more Reports from your preferred category/categories, before clicking the View, Download, or Print button in the Reports Frame.

 

Click the Company Search button in the Banner frame.

 To Save Selected Preferences Within the Financial Reports Page: 

Select the reports you would like to save.

Scroll down to the bottom of the screen

Click Current Report List

Click the Save Current Selected Reports button.

When the prompt window appears enter the name you would like to give to this saved reports file.  Enter a meaningful name you will recognize later.

Click the Save button in the prompt window.

Loss Reserve Options
Loss Reserve Options allow you to specify the exact type of Loss Reserve report to be generated. Loss reserve options are as follows:

Current Selection
Select the type of Loss Reserve report to generate from the Current Selection drop down list at the top of the Loss Reserves page. (NOTE: Several different reports can result for each option based on other options chosen. For detailed information about the reports available for each option and the formulas used to generate those reports, see the document LOSSFORM.DOC available in the File Repository.) Available formats include:

  • Data Triangles
  • Age-to-Age Development Factors
  • Age-to-Age Methods
  • Loss Reserve Projections
  • Loss Ratios

Type of Reserve
Depending on the type of report being generated, different reserve types can be selected. To select a reserve type, click the radio button to the left of the type. (NOTE: Not all reserve types are available for all reports. If a particular reserve type is not available for the report selected in the Current Selection option, it cannot be selected.) Reserve types include:

  • Paid - claims that have been paid
  • Case - claim that has been incurred and reported, but not paid
  • IBNR - incurred, but not reported claims
  • Incurred Loss Reserves - case reserve and IBNR claims

Loss Reserve Projection Method
A Loss Reserve Projection Method can be selected for some report options. To select a projection method, click the radio button to the left of the method. (NOTE: If the Loss Projection Method does not apply to the selected report, the radio buttons for those methods cannot be selected.) Loss Reserve Projection Methods include:

  • Average
  • 3-Year Average
  • 4-Year Average
  • Average Excluding High and Low
  • Weighted Average

Output
To view or download the selected report, select the appropriate radio button in the Output region of the Loss Reserves Option page. Output options include:

  • View Report
  • Download Report Data (NOTE: This option is not currently available.)

Line of Business
To generate a Loss Reserves report, you must select a specific line of business. Lines of business include:

  • Auto
  • Commercial Auto
  • Special Liability
  • Medical Malpractice
  • Other Liability
  • Product Liability
  • Summary
  • Multiple Peril
  • Workers Compensation

Cocode
This option allows you to generate Loss Reserve reports for a different company without returning to the Financial Firm Search page. To search for a different company, enter the new Company Code in the CoCode box.

Year
This option allows you to generate Loss Reserve Reports for a different year without returning to the Financial Firm Search page. To generate a report based on a different data year, select the correct year from the drop-down list.
